Morenci Unified School District is the largest school district in Greenlee County. We are located in Morenci, Arizona, a small rural mining community positioned 40 miles from New Mexico and 40 miles from Safford, Arizona.

Our goal is to help all students succeed at each grade level and graduate from high school well prepared for the next level of their educational journey. Our staff is dedicated to making our schools an exceptional place to learn. We believe we can ensure this by building supportive, positive relationships in a culture of academic excellence. All of us – including cafeteria workers, custodians, maintenance workers, instructional aides, computer technicians, teachers, administrators, office personnel and other staff are a team focused on supporting the continued academic and personal growth of each student.
Morenci School District is one of the oldest school districts in Arizona. In fact, we recently celebrated our 100th year of service to the community. Our district is steep in tradition and holds a long record of success. It is with great pride we say, “Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat.”

Our one employer and benefactor is Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc., the largest copper mine in the United States. Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. are very proud of the Morenci Unified School District and generously support its programs and academic endeavors.

Morenci is truly a place where children can grow up in the great outdoors and learn to appreciate nature and all it has to offer. Being located at 3,100 feet above sea level in a low mountainous area, we experience a very moderate climate. Our winters will generally have a couple of weeks of night time freezing and a month in the summer where daily temperatures exceed 100 degrees. With majestic mountains rising on all sides, the views are spectacular in any direction you look. Outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, camping or just enjoying an afternoon at the river make the Morenci area a popular place to live.

One of our local treasures is a 40 member herd of big horn sheep that can be seen grazing along the roads within the confines of our community.

Day to day items can be purchased locally, with most major purchases being made in Safford, Arizona. Tucson, Phoenix, and Las Cruces are a three hour drive away, however tall pine trees, hunting, and fishing are less than twenty minutes away.

Hometown restaurants in Morenci and the surrounding towns offer a variety of food just right for the special occasion or when you are short on time. Recreational activities include parks, bowling alley, summer time swimming pool and a movie theater. At $4 a ticket, the movie theater is cool escape from the summer time heat!

Throughout the year, community and country-wide activities are popular choices for residents of Morenci. The Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. picnic is a crowd pleasing event each and every year. There is also the Festival of Lights in Clifton, 4th of July fireworks, Lion’s Wrestling, Baseball and Golf Tournaments, Homecoming parades, County Fair in Duncan, and horse races that offer family friendly fun and excitement for all.
